We have created a checklist of all the options we believe a web design company should offer. Our phone calls to agencies, outsourcers, and freelancers did not give us the full scope of what is offered by each, so we gathered additional information from their websites. If an option wasn’t featured on the website or mentioned during our phone call, then we did not give the agency, outsourcer, or freelancer a check in that column. We believe a web design company should be upfront about what they offer, which is why the Capitol Tech Solutions’ website is intentionally robust and detailed regarding all of our capabilities.

CTS wants you to ask the right questions before hiring a web designer!

During our research we asked 11 questions but here are 5 questions you should ask a web design company before doing business with them.

  1. Who will make up the team that will be working on my website? (i.e.: account manager, developer, content writer)

The team working on your website will depend on the scope of work you want performed.

An account manager will communicate with you throughout the project, keeping you updated on progress as well as addressing any questions or concerns that may come up along the way.

It is important that you are matched with experienced developers who can successfully create a winning site for your business or brand. Don’t take their word for it, ask to see previous project examples to confirm the level of talent being offered.

If you are considering working with a company’s content writer don’t hesitate to ask for examples of their work as well. A company should be able to provide examples of high-quality created content for a diverse range of industries and clientele.

  2. Do you outsource any of the development work or is all of the development completed in-house?

It is important to know if there is an entire team working in-house because it will make them more accessible to you. Many people in the web design industry outsource their work to cheaper alternatives overseas, but at CTS we find that working collaboratively in-house leads to the best high-quality web design solutions for our customers. If outsourcing is done, be sure to ask for the credentials of those contractors who will be working on your website.

  3. What is your web design/site build process?

If your potential web design company can talk you through a design/site build process in detail or provide documentation outlining their process, then it is likely they are an experienced vendor. If they are unable to do this, they are likely a newbie designer and you should avoid being a test case for their unproven skills.

  4. How long will it take to complete my web design?

This depends on the scope of work required and how quickly you can provide the content required, but you should still ask what the company’s average turnaround time is for most projects. A web design company should be able to give you an estimate for your specific project. Also, be sure to ask what recourse you have if they don’t meet their target date!

  5. What platforms do you use to build your website?

When building a brand-new website, it is important that you are on a platform that performs well for your needs. As yourself what the goals you want to achieve with the website and make sure the company can assure the platform your site will be built is compatible with these goals.

For instance, if you are interested in SEO we would recommend staying away from platforms like Wix and Squarespace as they strip away valuable content search engines utilize to rank your website. Check also to see if the platform offers a Content Management System (CMS). Having a platform with CMS allows you the tools to help you self-manage website pages without the knowledge of website coding. For the best of both worlds, we recommend WordPress which is what roughly 30% of all websites are built on currently.

Don’t be afraid to ask these questions! A web design company should be thrilled to give you answers so that all questions and expectations are covered before a project begins. The partnership between web designers and clients should be as transparent as possible. We look forward to continuing to offer the best guidance through your website development project.
